There are a few reasons ADHD is often missed in women and individuals assigned female at birth.
Gender differences can influence how ADHD presents, and the different ADHD presentations can also manifest in different ways.
Predominantly Inattentive ADHD is often missed or misdiagnosed because it tends to be less disruptive and noticeable than the Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation.
Further, hyperactivity and impulsivity can manifest differently from person to person. Some people have a more classic presentation, while others may experience hyperactivity as constant mental activity, anxiety-like symptoms, or impulsivity rather than the outward hyperactivity most commonly associated with ADHD.
In summary, ADHD in women may be missed because their struggle may be happening on the inside.
